Just below the surface of each community lays the history of a region once rich in cattle, timber, and yes, GOLD! Numerous museums, attractions and historic sites tell the story of cowboys, loggers, miners and the provisioners that followed; the only ones of the lot to get rich.
But long before the European and Mexican settlers came, the American Indians lived in harmony with the land, surviving decades in this area of such beauty and prosperity. Their story, too, can be found in ancestral celebrations and tribal gatherings; a living history of the region. And speaking of living... how about the hands-on experience of the Childrens Museum of the Sierra for the young in age and at heart? Learning has never been so much fun.
