Weather conditions can change quickly in the high elevations during the winter months. Chains may be required, depending on weather, type of vehicle and type of tire.Signage will advise when chain conditions are in effect. Officers with the California Highway Patrol are often stationed at the areas to enforce chain control. If you don't have chains, call us at (559) 683-4636 for a list of local businesses that can provide you with the necessary equipment. If you don't know how to put them on, crews will often be located at the beginning of the chain control area and can assist you for a small fee. If you are driving a rental car, be sure to ask your rental company about chains.
Fog or low clouds are sometimes encountered in the area, especially in the Spring. The California Highway Patrol may use "pacing" to keep traffic to a slower speed during these conditions. Be sure not to pass the officer in these situations. If you come across foggy conditions at night, slow down and use your low-beam headlights. Most major highways have a white "fog line" in the far right lane. If possible slowly move to the right lane and use the "fog line" to help you stay on the roadway.
One of the great aspects of Madera County is the abundant wildlife throughout. Keep an eye out while driving to keep you, and our animals safe.
