Winter Wonderland: Tuolumne Grove and Crane Flat with the Yosemite Conservancy

Experience Yosemite’s winter magic among towering sequoias and at a historic fire lookout.

Join a Yosemite expert for an educational winter experience in the beautiful and quiet northwestern part of the park. Depending on conditions, you’ll either snowshoe or hike among the towering trees in the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias. As you explore, you’ll learn about the grove’s natural and human history, look for signs of the diverse animals that rely on this special ecosystem, including owls, fishers, and deer, and enjoy the quiet that descends on the forest in winter.

After enjoying a walk with snowshoes (or without, depending on conditions) among the giants, ascend to Crane Flat Lookout, where you can take in panoramic views and learn about the historic two-story fire tower, which was built in 1931 as the first permanent lookout structure in the park.
