Bighorn Sheep Backpack with the Yosemite Conservancy

Join a unique Yosemite backpacking trip to explore the stomping grounds of an iconic endangered species: Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep. 

On this full-day adventure, you’ll join fellow Yosemite-lovers for a high-elevation hike in the Tuolumne Meadows area. Perfect for first-time high country visitors, you’ll learn about alpine ecology, wildlife and geology; revel in the majestic views of mountains, meadows and lakes; and hear insider tips for your future travels in this quiet part of the park. For an extra fun day, be sure to bring your curiosity and ask questions about the unique high-alpine environment — see if you can stump your guide!

Included with your registration:

  • Three full days of guided backpacking in the Tuolumne Meadows area (8:30 am on Friday, August 21 through approximately 3 pm on Sunday, August 23  depending on the speed of the group), plus an introductory evening meeting (7:30 pm on Thursday, August 20 at Tuolumne Meadows Campground).
  • Park entry (as needed).
  • Bear-canister rental and Yosemite Wilderness permit.
  • Two nights of tent camping at Tuolumne Meadows Campground before and after the trip, as needed (Thursday, August 20 and Sunday, August 23).
  • Note: Our limited camping sites are for participants only. The sites are shared. Tents only. We cannot adjust the dates.
  • Option to upgrade accommodations to Tuolumne Meadows Lodge(Thursday, August 20 and Sunday, August 23).
  • Note: There is no discount if you choose not to use our gate pass or campsites. Information about upgrading your accommodations will be emailed to you after you sign up. The option expires 30 days before the program and does not offer a discount. We cannot adjust the dates. 

Experience Level:  Moderate, participants must be physically fit, with previous backpacking experience and comfortable hiking at high elevations.

Hiking:  Moderate.  7 miles round trip to Mono Pass base camp, plus a 3 mile day hike with some scrambling.

Elevation:  9,700 - 12,000 feet
